Grapefruit and drugs - a dangerous combination

Grapefruit, combined with a large number of drugs causes undesirable, often severe, consequences, carried by the French media.
Grapefruit juice, and other products based on the fruit, is a common cause of adverse reactions that occur in the interaction with dozens of drugs, including those for controlling cholesterol levels, anti-allergy drugs, antidepressants, drugs to lower blood pressure, pain medications, some antibiotics...

There are different assumptions regarding the negative effects, which relate primarily to the inhibition of certain enzymes.
Inhibition of increases in blood concentrations of certain drugs normally metabolized by these enzymes and leads to overdose and are registered and fewer cases of reducing the concentration of drug in the blood, and therefore less of their effectiveness.
